Student collaboration with 'The Photography Movement' project

LAE Tottenham students have been collaborating with professional photographers from 'The Photography Movement' to develop their creativity and express their emotions through photography. The project started in January 2018 and has enabled students to openly discuss the topic of mental health.

The Photography Movement was established by Scott Shillum and Steve Wallington after losing close family and friends. It has since gone from strength to strength and is now supported by a number of internationally acclaimed photographers.

With the brief ‘Inside Out’, students were given weekly workshops covering an introduction to how a camera works, including aperture, film speed and loading film, to more experimental sessions on lighting, composition, portraiture, capturing speed and depth of field.

Students also greatly benefitted from an extraordinary trip to the Getty International Archive where they were able to learn about the innovate processes throughout the history of photography and watch a conservationist at work.

In addition, students were able to learn about mental health struggles from professional photographers Daniel Regan and Antonia Attwood, who explained how they had used their creativity within photography to help them through difficult stages in their lives.

Our students are now ready to fully explore their ideas and some have already submitted their images. The competition deadline is the beginning of September with the aim of exhibiting the final entries in time for World Mental Health Day 2018 on 10th October 2018. The winning pictures will be shown in a special exhibition and the overall winner will also receive a Canon SLR digital camera.
