Y13 Politics Trip to City Hall
A Fantastic Trip to the Heart of London Politics!
Last week, our Year 13 Politics students stepped out of the classroom and into the heart of democracy at City Hall, London. This incredible experience offered a much-needed break from exams, giving students a first-hand look at how politics operates at the local level.
The day began with a front-row seat viewing the first Mayor's Question Time session of the year, where students observed Sir Sadiq Khan answering questions from the London Assembly. This unique opportunity allowed them to critically consider how effective this form of governance is and observe how the Assembly performs its scrutiny role. Our students also received a shoutout from the London Assembly Chair, Andrew Boff, during the meeting which can be viewed here.
Within his busy schedule, Sadiq still managed to find time to catch up with our students and take a quick selfie.
The group then had the privilege of meeting Joanne McCartney, Statutory Deputy Mayor of London and Assembly Member for Enfield and Haringey. She gave an insightful talk about her role in the London Assembly and answered questions from our students, shedding light on her responsibilities and how they impact our communities.
In addition, students were inspired by conversations with Greater London Authority employees, who opened their eyes to the diverse career paths available within London politics.
The day became even more memorable with an inspiring talk from Mete Coban MBE, Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy. He highlighted the importance of young and diverse voices in shaping the future of British politics.
To round off the day, our group soared over the Thames on the IFS Cloud Cable Cars, ending the trip on a literal high note!
A huge thank you to everyone at City Hall who made this trip so enriching and impactful for our students.
